The Importance of Health Screening:
Pixie & Trixie's Story
Pixie and Trixie were our first Biewer Terriers. These tenacious little terriers captured our hearts and cemented my decision to start my own small breeding program. While these sisters have the most wonderful temperaments and are absolutely adorable, both have congenital disorders that prevented them from becoming foundation females for our program. Pixie was diagnosed with an enlarged heart and renal disease & Trixie with a bleeding disorder. Outwardly both appeared & acted healthy. However, their bloodwork and x-rays told a different story. The only visual sign that something was wrong, was Pixie's weight. She was always thin, no matter how much she ate. Their breeder had bred Yorkshire Terriers and Biewer Terriers for many years and was confident she knew her bloodline. However, as we know from the science of genetics, some disorders require two copies of a gene to be expressed. While there is no guarantee that their disorders would have been prevented if their sire and dam had all of the recommended health screenings for their breed, they may have been caught earlier, if they had been taken to a veterinarian for puppy wellness exams before going home. As breeders, we can't prevent everything. After all, these are living creatures. However, we can make more responsible breeding decisions for the health of the puppies we bring into this world & the families that welcome them into their hearts and homes.
FYI: The Biewer Terriers in our breeding program are NOT related to Pixie & Trixie
